H.R.H. Don Rubén Alberto: A Life Dedicated to Protecting the Order of St. John of Jerusalem

09.11.2024

The story of His Royal Highness Don Ruben Alberto I, Prince Protector of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem, Knights of Malta OSI, is a fascinating tapestry of nobility, dedication, and commitment to chivalric values. Born in Argentina on October 14, 1969, Don Ruben Alberto Gavalda is the heir to a lineage that traces back to some of Europe's oldest dynasties, uniting Semitic, Fran- co-Merovingian, and Northern Spanish lines.

From a young age, Don Ruben exhibited a profound interest in his historical heritage. A direct descendant of Don Enrico de Gavalda, who emigrated from Catalonia to Argentina in 1888, he undertook a meticulous journey of heraldic, histo- rical, and genealogical research to restore the honors of his ancestors. In 2003, he reestablished the Sovereign House of Gevaudan-Gavalda, adopting the patronymic name de Jure Dominus Esteve IV.

His lineage directly connects him to Sovereign Count Don Bertran de Gevaudan/Gavalda, a prince of Franco-Me- ro-Carolingian royal blood. This heritage makes him the legitimate male heir of the ancient sovereigns of his dyna- stic domain, uniting three lines of sovereignty: the Davidic house for the Semitic line, the House of Toulouse for the Franco-Germanic line, and the House of Gavalda for the Northern Spanish line.

Despite his noble ancestry, Don Ruben Alberto I has clarified that he is not a territorial claimant to the current French state. His status is that of an immemorial dynasty in exile, aiming to honor and preserve his family's historical tradition.

Recognized as a Count and Peer of France, Titular King of France (Merovingian dynasty) in the Würzburg Almanac of 2014, the Princely and Comital House of Gevaudan is mentioned in the Almanach de Saxe Gotha as the "Princely House of Gevaudan." The European nobility acknowledges the status of the Princes-Counts of Gavalda as His Royal Highness, Prince of the Holy Roman Empire and member of the Spanish imperial nobility.

Don Ruben Alberto I is deeply involved in various chivalric, scientific, academic, and humanitarian societies worldwide. He is an honorary member of the Editorial Scientific Com- mittee of the Golden Book of Mediterranean Nobility and the regent of the International Brotherhood of Titled Noble Houses. Additionally, he serves as the dynastic high protec- tor of the International Union of Assemblies of Nobles.

As the Protector of the Sovereign Order of St. John of Jerusalem, Knights of Malta OSJ, headquartered in Malta under the leadership of Grand Master Don Basilio Cali, Don Ruben Alberto I plays a fundamental role in supporting and promoting the values of the Order. His protection not only bestows prestige but also ensures that members of the Order have the freedom to act in the name of charity and the defense of Christianity, in line with the historical tradition of Prince Protectors.

The life of H.R.H. Don Ruben Alberto I is a shining example of how passion for one's roots can translate into concre- te commitment toward others. His dedication to preserving his family's heritage and promoting noble causes reflects a profound sense of responsibility and altruism. With humi- lity and determination, he continues to be a source of inspi- ration, demonstrating that true greatness lies not in titles or positions but in how one chooses to serve humanity.

Through his work, Don Ruben Alberto I embodies the principles of solidarity and humanity at the heart of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem. His story invites us to rediscover the importance of tradition, culture, and commitment to others values that transcend time and borders.
